Urban Shoes

Artist Statement; Urban Shoes

Urban decay and fashion have always been something that I enjoy photographing. In this piece I wanted to work with shoes, and a more comfortable style of fashion, for example Converse All Stars, and photograph them in a more urban area’s around Columbus, Ohio. This piece is made up of three different photographs that transition from color into black and white. Also the shoes transition from being the main focus in the first photograph, and slowly becoming less of a focal point.  I am going to frame them in a simple frame’s, so that the photographs can speak for themselves. While working on this project I did a photo-shoot of just the shoes, by placing them in different ways and taking different shots frame by frame. Then on a saturday afternoon I went around downtown, Columbus taking different shots of places around the Short North. I then placed the Urban photographs with the photographs of the shoes.

Forgotten

Artist Statement; Forgotten

For me urban decay are objects I find, that at one point someone cared for them, and then forgot about them and left them behind. To me these found objects are beautiful and unique. Urban decay was my main idea behind these photographs. While I was walking through the Short North I found a dead sunflower in someone’s backyard, that was horribly over grown. I thought the arch on the plant was unique and beautiful.

The first picture that I took was the piece in the center, I wanted to show the sunflower in the spot that I found it in, and how at one point someone had cared enough to plant it in their backyard but then they forgot about it. The photo’s on either side of the center piece is to show the beauty of the sunflower itself and how the plant might have been in nature.

In all three of the photographs I used a telephoto lens and natural lighting. I printed the photographs out on soft-gloss photo paper, and each photo is 2” by 2.9” inches. For my final piece I decided to frame the photographs in medium size frames. Each frame I painted gold, and then also painted the mate gold as well. The reason I placed the photographs in gold frames was to place importance to something that someone had forgotten. The gold is also eye catching, and pulls the viewer into the photograph wanting to take a closer look into the frames. Also with having the photographs small it allows you to be closer to the subject matter, and really be able to see the beauty in the sunflower.
